In their book Esther and Diana provide a huge list of different activities for shaping diversified retrospectives and keeping the retrospectives exciting and thrilling.They start with the introduction of a general structure for retrospectives: Set the Stage - Gather Data - Generate Insights - Decide What to Do - Close the Retrospective. For all those different phases they then provide and explain multiple activities. They also mention for which time horizon each activity is appropriate: iteration, release, project. In addition they talk about general challenges for leading retrospectives, which I found very interesting and inspiring.There's one criticism. Despite the detailed illustrated activities for the different phases, I still miss a clear picture of which activities can be combined from the different stages to form a retrospective. This should have been made clearer in the book.Until now I attended retrospectives using only the start/stop/continue, or similar, approach, with a short reflection on the last action items and definition of new action items. I very much like the proposed general structure for retrospectives and the collection of different activities and am keen trying them in practice.Despite my criticism I definitely do recommend this book to everyone who wants to get new ideas for retrospective activities and who wants to perform interesting and exciting retrospectives.
Just finished reading the book to the end. The writers have provided a lot of examples how Agile Retrospectives could and should be done. She also gives bulleted points so that it would be easy to navigate to the page when it will be implemented. I had been looking for this book since a long time.

In diesem Buch werden alle notwendigen Techniken vorgestellt und auch mit hilfreichen Beispielen erläutert die man für eine Retrospektive braucht. Dieses Buch wird sich sicher auch als Nachschlagewerk sehr gut eignen.
Nachdem ich es mir immer nur geliehen hatte, nun gekauft. Es ist einfach ein Super nachschlagewerk!In Kombi mit Gamestorming unschlagbar!
Mit teuer ist nicht der Preis, sondern der Alltagswert dieses Buchs gemeint - im Sinn von "lieb und teuer" - für Personen, die regelmäßig Retrospektiven designen und moderieren.
Das Buch „Agile Retrospectives“ von Esther Derby und Diana Larsen zählt bereits seit Jahren und zu Recht zu den Standardwerken in der agilen Literatur. Retrospektiven passen sehr gut in ein agiles Arbeitsumfeld, ist doch das Prinzip „Inspect & Adapt“ fest in Frameworks wie Scrum verankert. Es geht um die kontinuierliche Verbesserung der Produktivität, der Team-Fähigkeiten bei der Zusammenarbeit und nicht zuletzt die Verbesserung der Qualität.Retrospektiven sind zunächst einmal ritualisierte Meetings, in der gemeinsam zurückgeschaut wird, wie man miteinander gearbeitet hat mit dem Ziel, konkrete Verbesserungsmöglichkeiten zu identifizieren, die man anschließend nach der Retrospektive gemeinsam in die Tat umsetzen will. Da jeder von uns eine eigene und oft auch andere Wahrnehmung der Ereignisse hat, liegen die einzelnen Verbesserungsmaßnahmen nicht unbedingt auf dem Tisch. Es lohnt sich, das Vergangene sorgfältig aufzuarbeiten, bevor neue Aktionen beschlossen werden.Derby und Larsen haben für die Retrospektiven eine spezifische und immer gleiche Struktur vorgeschlagen:1) Set The Stage. Eine wenige Minuten dauernde Einleitung in das Thema bei dem vor allem alle Teilnehmer zur Aktivierung einmal kurz das Wort erhalten sollen.2) Gather Data. Bevor Lösungen erarbeitet werden können, müssen die Fakten und Erlebnisse aufgearbeitet werden. Das sollte die vielleicht zeitintensivste Phase der Retro sein.3) Generate Insights. Hier geht es um das Warum? Was ist der Kern des Problems? Was sind die eigentlichen Ursachen?4) Decide What To Do. Das Team erarbeitet hier Maßnahmen bzw. kleine Experimente und entscheidet sich abschließend für einige wenige Aufgaben, die es in der nächsten Arbeitsphase umsetzen möchte.5) Close the Retrospektive. Wie sollen die Ergebnisse dokumentiert werden, wie werden die Maßnahmen verfolgt? Nicht zuletzt ist hier Raum für eine Bewertung der Retrospektive. Was lief gut? Was soll beim nächsten Mal verbessert werden?Ein Großteil des Buches ist diesen fünf Phasen gewidmet. Insgesamt schlagen die Autoren 30 Übungen vor, die den Moderator bzw. Facilitator dabei helfen, seine Retrospektive gut vorzubereiten. Die einzelnen Übungen sind ausführlich beschrieben und immer gleich aufgebaut, was die Vergleichbarkeit sichert. Wer regelmäßig Retrospektiven ausrichtet wird dieses Buch früher oder später in Griffweite haben wollen.Bei aller Praxistauglichkeit darf man gerade zu Beginn, wenn man erste Erfahrungen mit Retrospektiven sammelt, aber nicht vergessen, dass Retrospektiven einen Verbesserungsprozess in Gang setzen und halten wollen. Es lohnt sich, sein Team zu Beginn gut zu beobachten und im Vorfeld herauszufinden, welches Thema man fokussieren sollte und welche Übungen einen dabei unterstützen können. Damit eine Retro mehr ist, also nur eine lose Abfolge von netten Aktivitäten. Daher möchte ich hier ausdrücklich auch noch mal die Kapitel 2 und 3 empfehlen, bei denen es darum geht, wie man eine passende Retro zusammenstellt und diese dann durchführt. Auch und gerade nach nochmaliger Lektüre: Absolut empfehlenswert. Das ganze Buch natürlich!
